We are going on three weeks without it. After almost 2 1/2 years we are DONE.
It has been in the talks for months (probably closer to a year). We had mostly limited it to naps, bedtime, and the occasional long car ride. It was starting to become an obsession. Maddie would ask to lay in her bed and would often sneak in her room and stand by her bed with it in her mouth.
One night while at the dinner table, Maddie was not cooperating…trying to get down from the table, not trying anything on her plate, and just being overall cranky. I said to her “if you don’t stop acting like that I am going to throw your diddy away”. I don’t know why it came to me like that. It sounds awful typing it out, but that is exactly what happened. Well the behavior continued, so I got her diddy and tossed it out the door (once again, I don’t know why I threw it outside, but I did). She just looked at me and said “mommy throw my diddy away?” I said “yep, no more diddy”. We continued our evening as usual and when it came to bedtime and her asking for it we just reminded her that I had thrown it away and that she would have to sleep without it. She never really cried or fussed. She went to bed and we have never looked back!
Over the next couple of days she did ask for it at nap and bedtime, but we just reminded her that it was gone and she was a big girl now.
It feels good. Real good. The only time that it has made me sad is when we say our prayers at night she has said on several occasions “God bless my diddy”. It pulls on the heartstrings just a little bit. But I quickly get over it and thank the Lord that we are not tied down to that piece of plastic anymore….We no longer have to hear those words “I want my diddy ba-ba”…well until this new baby comes along….
First time with the plug…
After 2 1/2 years we said “good bye"
